Revolutionary Woom Bikes: A Game-Changer in Children's Cycling

Christian Bezdeka's Award-Winning Design of Lightweight, High-Quality Bikes for Kids

Christian Bezdeka, along with Marcus Ihlenfeld, embarked on this journey of creating the perfect bike for their children. After four years of extensive research, development, and testing, Woom Bikes were launched in Europe in 2013. The design was born out of a need for quality bikes suitable for children, and the result is a range of six bikes catering to kids from one and a half to 14 years old.

What sets Woom Bikes apart from conventional children's bikes is their unique design and construction. Bezdeka and his team have developed 85% of the bike parts in-house, resulting in bikes that are tailor-made for the anatomy and needs of children. The bikes are 40% lighter than conventional children's bikes, thanks to the use of high-quality AA-6061 aluminum for the frames and forged aluminum for the components.

The Woom Bikes range includes six models, each designed for a specific age group. The Woom 1, for children between 1.5 to 3.5 years, weighs just 3.2 kg, while the Woom 6, designed for 10 to 14-year-olds, weighs 9.1 kg. Each model is designed with an upright seating position to support balance and improve the child's cycling skills.

The design process for Woom Bikes involved constant questioning, experimentation, and optimization. This approach was supported by the Austrian Wirtschaftsservice AWS and an Impulse XL grant. The prototypes were tested under real conditions at the Austrian AUVA Bike workshop, and feedback from these tests helped drive the development process.

Despite starting as a small start-up with limited resources, Woom Bikes has managed to establish a strong reputation among customers. The company's focus on developing a high-quality product has paid off, with happy customers recommending the bikes to others and helping to bring more bikes to avid young cyclists around the world.
